Surgical removal of fat lumps under the skin

Unusual fat lumps on the arm and thigh? A specialist needs to see them, because this mutation can be caused by various things.

Removal of fat lumps under the skin

Fat lumps under the skin have two known types: in medical terms, these are called atheromas and lipomas. The former is a cyst filled with sebum, while the latter is practically a tumor made of fat cells. It is important to note that even if the doctor's diagnosis is lipoma, the tumor is benign.

The difference between the two types of fat lumps under the skin is that lipomas are also painful, and regarding their appearance, a bit fuller. Without a consultation with a doctor in person, it is not possible, of course, to determine which type someone is affected by. A dermatological medical opinion is required.

Since fat lumps under the skin cannot be healed with creams and other methods, unfortunately only surgical removal can be a solution, of which the patient can decide based on the doctor's medical recommendations. The excision of the atheroma does not require a big cut. They open up the cyst with a tiny excision, squeeze out the sebum inside it, then through this tiny incision, using a hooked needle, they pull out the husk of the atheroma. Because of the sutures, the cut will cause a small scar. The removal of the husk is important because otherwise, its cells would reproduce the sebum, and the growth might redevelop.

If the lipoma is smaller, surgical excision is advised, because the sutures do not cause a big scar. The method of removal, therefore, depends on the location of the fat lump, and the preferences of the patient.

Removal of lipomas at Downtown Medical Center

At Downtown Medical Center, you have the opportunity to have lipomas examined and surgically removed during the same appointment.
The removal of lipomas is done in local anesthesia, by a surgical method. Following the procedure, the doctor sutures the wound, therefore, it is necessary to come back to the clinic for the removal of the sutures after the discussed period of time.
The excised lipomas - if the operating doctor so decides during the surgery - are sent for histological examination.
