Duplex examinations of limbs
In the veins of the limbs, the doppler ultrasound examination is suitable for exploring circulation, obstructions (thrombosis), and for checking progress after the treatment of thrombosis.
Detailed elaboration
The doppler ultrasound examination of the limbs is suitable for exploring circulation, obstructions (thrombosis), and for checking progress after the treatment of thrombosis, or indicating dysfunctions of the valvula. During the examination, we use two methods for displaying circulation, hence the term Duplex.
During the examination, the leg or the forearm might need to be pressed mildly, quickening circulation, making it more easy to display.
In what cases is the examination advised?
- suspected thrombosis
- after the treatment of thrombosis, to check progress
- suspected dysfunction of the valvula
Sudden swelling, pain, and discolouration of the limb necessitates emergency examination and treatment.
Preparation:
Preparation is not necessary, but before the examination, the limb in question must be made available.
Limits, further examinations
The examination might be difficult in the case of thick, swelled limbs. If any deviancy is indicated, vascular surgical examination might be advised.
